Mechanical safety assessment criteria
In addition to developing various product safety directives, the EU has issued many different product safety standards. Some apply to a particular product, and some are general evaluation rules that apply to multiple products. ---Engineering Machinery CE Certification.
As far as the mechanical instructions are concerned, they can be roughly divided into the following types of standards:
Type A Standard (Basic Safety Standard): Gives basic concepts, design principles, and general conditions that apply to all machines.
E.g:
EN292-1:Basic concepts of mechanical safety standards and general design principles
Part 1: Basic terms and methods
EN292-2:Basic concepts of mechanical safety standards and general design principles
Part II: Technical Principles and Description
EN1050:Mechanical Safety - Risk Assessment Principles
Type B Standard (Group Safety Standard): Handles a safety situation or a related safety facility that can be used in a wide variety of machines:
Type B1 standard: for specific safety conditions (eg safety distance, surface temperature, noise)
E.g:
EN294:Mechanical safety - a safe distance to prevent upper limbs from reaching dangerous areas.
EN811:Mechanical safety - a safe distance to prevent lower limbs from reaching dangerous areas
Type B2 standard: for related safety facilities (eg: two-hand control, interlocking device, pressure sensing device, shield)
EN1088: Mechanical safety - interlocking device with/without guard lock
—General principles and regulations of design
EN953:Mechanical safety—General specifications for the design and construction of guards (fixed/movable)
Type C Standard (Machine Safety Standard): Provides detailed safety requirements for a specific machine or group of machines.
E.g:
EN201:Safety requirements for plastic/rubber injection molding machines
EN692:Safety requirements for mechanical punching machines
EN693:Safety requirements for hydraulic presses
EN860:Safety requirements for single-sided planer
EN869:Safety requirements for metal casting machines
EN982:Safety requirements for hydraulic systems
EN983:Safety requirements for pneumatic systems
EN1493:Safety requirements for car lifts
EN12415:Safety requirements for small lathes
EN12417:Comprehensive processing machine safety requirements
EN12478:Safety requirements for large lathes
EN12717:Safety requirements for Drilling machine
