USA / American ETL certification introduction

US ETL Certification profile

ETL is short for the electronic test lab (ElectricalTestingLaboratories). ETL laboratory was founded by the American inventor Edison in 1896 and enjoys a high reputation in the United States and the world. Like UL and CSA, ETL can issue ETL certification marks according to UL standards or U.S. national standards, and can also issue composite certification marks according to UL standards or U.S. national standards and CSA standards or Canadian standards. The representation at the bottom right applies to the United States, the representation at the bottom left applies to Canada, and the representation with and applies to both countries.

Any electrical, mechanical or electromechanical product bearing the ETL mark indicates that the product has met the minimum requirements of the generally recognized product safety standards in the United States and Canada, and that it has been tested to meet the relevant product safety standards; It also means that the production plant agrees to receive strict regular inspections to ensure the consistency of product quality and can be sold to the U.S. and Canadian markets.

ETL also requires that its production site has been inspected, and the applicant agrees to conduct regular follow-up inspections of its plant thereafter to ensure that the product always complies with this requirement.

Relationship between ETL Certification and UL certification

What is the difference between UL and ETL?

UL and ETL both represent that the product has been tested by the National Accredited Testing Laboratory (NRTL) to meet the appropriate safety standards, and also represent that the manufacturer agrees to receive rigorous regular inspections to ensure the consistency of product quality. So the real difference is in service. As an ETL customer, you benefit from tailor-made testing, inspection and certification services, fast operating cycles and flexible working practices. We are creating ways to work more closely with our customers so that your products get to market faster, smoother and more efficiently.

ETL certification and UL certification have the same North American market access effect, but the cost of ETL certification is much lower than UL certification, generally only half of UL certification, and ETL certified product testing can be transferred through CB test report, which can save you a lot of testing costs. ETL certification time is also much shorter than UL certification, in special cases, ETL can be issued first, and then factory review, for the export of your products to save valuable time.

(2) What is a National Accredited Testing Laboratory (NRTL)?

Simply put, it is a third-party laboratory accredited by the Occupational Safety and Health Association (OSHA) to test products according to current safety standards. The role of a nationally accredited testing laboratory is to provide independent assessment, testing and certification services for electrical products and gas (oil) products. ETL is an accredited NRTL in the United States, an accredited testing organization and certification entity in Canada, and an accredited entity in Europe.

(3) Does the manufacturer have to obtain UL certification?

Noooo! Many manufacturers mistakenly believe that they cannot choose other third-party testing partners, but any NRTL recognized by the Occupational Safety and Health Association (OSHA) can perform testing, inspection and certification services. The ETL series mark indicates that the product complies with national standards.

⑷ What can the ETL logo on the product explain?

The ETL mark on the product indicates that the product has been tested by ETL and meets the relevant standards. For distributors, retailers and consumers, it means that they buy products that have been tested and certified by third parties.

Will retailers accept products with ETL logo?

The ETL mark is proof that the product complies with the mark, and ETL is also a nationally recognized testing Laboratory (NRTL), so there is no reason for retailers not to accept products bearing the ETL mark. Some retailers or distributors also mistakenly believe that third-party testing organizations have no choice. ITS is changing perceptions and helping businesses get their products to market faster.

Which retailers buy products with the ETL logo?

Most retailers around the world buy products with the ETL logo, and for them ETL has the same effect as UL. Some retailers are listed below, but not limited to them.

(9) Are the customs and trade prosecutors in North America aware of the ETL mark?

Because ETL is a nationally accredited testing laboratory recognized by the Occupational Safety and Health Association (OSHA), its logo is widely accepted.
